Tracing roots to conventional African slave folk songs which came in 1619 to Jamestown, Virgina, in the beginning soul music was “African Spirituals” from 1825 and the next twenty five years. As a means of secret communication these spirituals west African songs were often used by slaves for harmonious and metrical relationships. Gospel songs replaced others at the end of the 19th century. A blend of earlier hymns, elements from the spirituals and black performance styles were developed out from black gospel music. A piano or an organ, anchored with tambourines, electric guitar and hand-clapping is often accompanied with ecstatic dance and singing.
