WHY USE ICE?
The body reacts to injury by increasing blood flow to the affected area and allowing an infusion of additional fluids. This inflow combined with damaged connective tissue results in limited range of motion, swelling, pain, and sometimes heat at the injury site.
This is known as Inflammation. Although this is a natural response to injury, it can slow the healing process and unnecessarily increase the amount of pain you experience if allowed to continue uncontrolled. The application of ice can be an effective means of controlling inflammation and pain.
As your skin and underlying structures cool, you may feel the following normal
sensations:
