Clay Buchholz ( 10-5) did not look refined in his first start for Boston since 26 June, when he injured his left hamstring running the bases in San Francisco. Allowed a pair of home runs early in the game, and could not get a single out in the fifth. Allowed five runs and six hits, only to fall for just the second time in his last 10 starts .

Gonzalez gave up RBI singles by Beltre in the first inning and Jed Lowrie in the fifth. In the sixth , Kevin Youkilis opened with a single and Beltre followed with his 16th homer.

However, the pitcher got the win with a work of four runs and seven hits .

Michael Wuertz solved perfectly the ninth for his second save.
